Aerie Takes Flight:

What Families are Saying About Their Experiences

Aerie has often been described by participants and staff as a structured intensive day treatment program that is warm and welcoming with an emphasis on community. Days are busy, filled with group and individual therapy, time for academics, community engagement activities, and of course lunch and a bit of down time.

As one participant said, “I don’t know why it’s called a Partial Hospitalization Program. This is nothing like a hospital.” When asked what it’s like at Aerie, another participant said, “There is no drama like at other places I’ve been. We all like each other and get along well.”

In addition to group and individual therapy, one area that parents have found beneficial is the in person bi-weekly family therapy sessions. As one parent stated, “I cannot say enough about how transformative Aerie has been for our family.” Another recent participant’s parent commented, “Feedback about family dynamics was very helpful. I think overall my child is in a better place.”

Each participant works from day one on their transition plan for what’s next after Aerie, called a Flight Plan. These plans are collaborative in nature, client centered, and developed with not only the participant, but also their parents. One parent highlighted the Flight Plan as a valuable tool for the future. “The Flight Plan helped us feel empowered to carry on with my child’s progress beyond Aerie.”

A feature of Aerie programming that has proved incredibly helpful to our participants is the daily academic time and learning support. Our learning specialist, who is a certified special education teacher, works with each participant to set goals, support academic tasks, prepare for their next school, and address any cognitive challenges. Many of our participants have IEP and 504 plans. Having a learning specialist on staff who can work directly with schools and districts has increased the efficiency with transition planning and preparation.

Aerie’s location in downtown Concord affords participants many opportunities to learn, grow, and have some fun during our community engagement block. Whether walking to a grocery store to prepare for a sushi making activity or visiting a nearby art gallery, there are ample opportunities to engage in the community.
